EXCLUSIVE OFFER! LIMITED SUPPLIES ONLY- GET IT WHILE IT LASTS!

Have you ever been a victim to an advertisement when you are told that you must buy something right away? Or that the first 10 callers get a free item? These are all certain strategies to get the consumer to act on impulse instead of using rationality.

If you do not think about if the product is really necessary, the chances of buying it are more likely (if you don't really need the product). Recently people have started to catch on to these things and disregard the advertisement completely. Although, it seems (from the continuous use of this style of advertising) that there are still people out there who fall into the trap. Personally I have noticed this strategy mostly in infomercials.

Annually, infomercials make up 1.5 billion dollars in sales.  They are a large section in television advertising, and potentially equal or more effective than other television ads. The reason behind the act now tactic is because marketers do not want you to think twice about your decision, or consider other options. The more you rationalize about commitments, the likelihood of making the purchase decision decreases.

The next time an infomercial ad catches your eye, remember that there is a reason why the tell you to act now. The best thing to do is to think rationally about if the product is truly beneficial in your daily life, and if it's worth the cost before you buy it.
